Final submission The Aquarium art Gallery

My gallery owner is not actually an artist himself. After getting fired from his job as a marine biologist he took the escape in what he thought would be an easy task - to become a sculpture. He bought the first place he saw for sale with the hope of putting his art on display, and got to work. As it turned out, this was not as easy as it seemed, and what he managed to get together was not good enough to show to others in order to be taken seriously.
So, he came up with the brilliant idea of (ignoring plagiarism) displaying copies of other artists work - but with a twist: to put them under water...

Drafts, Parti's and Poche's

I started out exploring with the obvious elements in my design, the doors of opportunities and the wall they were going to sit in.

When I then made my Parti's I meant to show the obvious ways that gives you the first opportunity, a starting point, to base your oncoming choices from.

The Poches was quite hard to illustrate because of the unknown environment behind the doors. However this also made it easier because it could just be anything. The same goes for my drawings and model, since I couldnt go on with endless rooms and interlocking spaces, only the first transitional space is illustrated.

All drawings of my self produced drawings are at a scale of 1:100.

Site

The site I decided would be in a mountain. I wanted somewhere maze-like to enhance the notion of having a choice of where to go next - having no idea whats waiting around the next corner, having to rely on your choice and intuition to be able to hopefully get out.

Narrative and Scheme for the design

The painting is Chop Suey by Edward Hopper.
I started out with a different narrative than my final one, but after analyzing this painting further, I settled with a new one. From my own interpretation, the girl facing our way looks quite pale and shocked, listening to a story from her friend. According to the body language of the friend, she seems very confident and seems to be quite engaged in her story. I imagine her as being an opportunist, embracing life and what it has to offer. With this as the foundation for my narrative, the final narrative became "A wall of opportunities for an adventurous risk taker".

The scheme is quite literal. A 15 meter high wall with doors leading into the unknown. Behind the door you choose to go through, there is another one heading in a different directions, and even somtimes, there are the opportunity of a choice. Just as in real life, an opportunity can lead to new opportunities, lead no where (like some rooms that doesnt have any more doors than the one you just entered from) and sometimes even unexpected outcomes.

This notion of selection of ways to go in life, are reflected in the design. Some opportunities harder to even get to, symbolised by the slim and rail-less walkways heading up to the second and third elevation. Some people risk a lot to get to the top, where as others take the easy way. The outcome of either are unknown until you have tried it, in this case the door in question.
